Ghana will host the CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship from March 1 to 8, 2026, welcoming more than 48 clubs from across West Africa. The tournament, launched in Accra under the theme “Uniting West Africa Through Volleyball Excellence,” is being organized in collaboration with the Ghana Volleyball Federation (GVF) and Kalibi Volleyball Club. Participating countries include Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Niger, Togo, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Liberia.
At the launch, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddi Adams, described the event as more than just a competition. “The launch of the championship represents a call to action and a new chapter for volleyball in Ghana and the sub-region,” he said.
“Volleyball has a proud history in our country, but we can’t shy away from challenges such as inadequate facilities, limited funding and low media visibility.”
The Minister urged the media to give more attention to lesser-financed sports to help attract corporate sponsorship, while also pledging government’s support for infrastructure development.
He revealed plans to build multi-purpose courts across the country, and disclosed that part of the Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers budget had been reallocated to support other sports.
GVF President, George Tetteh, expressed optimism about Ghana’s prospects in the competition.
“It is an uphill task to organize this tournament, but with the support of the Ministry, Ghana would host it successfully and win it,” he said.
“Volleyball will become the number one sport in Ghana before my term ends.”
Chairman of Kalibi Volleyball Club, Bernard Mornah, appealed for more investment in indoor facilities.
“If you give us even one-twentieth of the support that the Black Stars receive, volleyball will reach a level we can be proud of. When it rains, we are left at the mercy of the weather. At least build two gyms for us,” he urged.
Other dignitaries at the launch included Greater Accra Volleyball Chairman Alfred Offei, Zone III President Ali Yaro, and representatives from the Ghana Police.
The 2026 championship promises not only fierce competition but also a platform to strengthen regional unity through volleyball.
